Blog Post #2: How does daily screen time affect the sleep quality of teenagers, and what factors can determine whether its effects are harmful or manageable

Hi there! In this blog post, I will explain my three steps of research for my question: “How does daily screen time affect the sleep quality of teenagers, and what factors can determine whether its effects are harmful or manageable,” with a brief explanation of each step.

Step 1: Research and understand the relationship between screen time and sleep

First, I will research how daily screen time affects the sleep quality of teenagers. This will possibly include looking for a scientific explanation for the relationship between screen time and sleep, such as how blue light from screens can disrupt the body’s cycle (circadian rhythm), and how screen use before bed may have an effect in delaying falling asleep.

Step 2: Find factors that will influence the impact of screen time on sleep

Next, I will investigate the different factors that can determine whether screen time is harmful or something that is manageable. For example, I will look at how the timing of screen use (using it either during the day or during the night), the type of activity (social media, homework, or gaming), screen brightness, and people’s habits, such as bedtime routines, affect sleep. This step will show me why screen time may affect people differently depending on what they use for their habits.

Step 3: Examine some strategies that will help reduce negative effects on screen time

Lastly, I will research some strategies that can help teenagers manage screen time healthily. This may include finding solutions like limiting screen use before bed, using blue light glasses or night mode, and creating consistent and healthy sleep routines.

Implications on society:

This question has important implications for both my community and me because screen time is a part of everyday life for most teenagers. For me personally, understanding how screen use affects sleep can help me make better choices, such as limiting my phone use before bed or improving my nighttime routine so I can feel less tired and be able to focus more when I am at school. For my community, especially other students, researching this question can raise awareness about how habits like late-night scrolling or gaming may impact sleep, mood, and overall health. It can also encourage healthier habits, such as setting screen limits. Overall, answering this question can help both me and the community make better decisions before sleep that support better well-being and academic success.
