1.) Where are you with your action?
Welcome to my third action post about assisting the elderly. Currently Valeriya and I have a base for this project, and are ready to start helping our community. So far, we explored our options for facilities, varying by distance, ratings and overall care. And we selected a few to email about our action project. We were doubtful if any centers were going to take our offer, due to our age and inexperience. But, luckily one center contacted us, The Madison Center. Though, we sadly haven’t been able to start any involvement because the center’s volunteer coordinator is away till May 11th, and we can’t start an introduction till then. However, we have many plans and ideas on what to help and how we can impact them positively.
2.) What are some successes that you have had? What are some challenges that you have faced? Have you been able to overcome them?
Since we are in the early stages of our volunteering project it has been hard to get any great successes, nevertheless, we have had many. For instance, like I mentioned, getting in touch with a center was a challenge and when someone reached out is turned to a big achievement. Now it means we have the ability to thankfully start our project. We were both very worried that no facility would want us coming to help out, since they have big resources and probably would need non to little help. Another huge thing for us is our time, we both have busy schedules balancing school and numerous extracurricular activities and it was hard to find a time to help out. We had to coordinated our time with the center’s, so many compromises and sacrifices were made to fit into a schedule. Also, on the topic of time, we need to work on our time management because we do respond to the center’s emails a bit late. To work on this we will make sure to use calendars, set reminders and prioritize the most important tasks (1).
4.) What are you doing next and why?
As we continue taking part of this project we plan to firstly get an introduction and tour the Madison Center after choosing a schedule. We will start learning, adapting and becoming more flexible to the needs of others. We will understand the center’s precautions, rules, and guidelines to be respectful and helpful to everyone. Afterwards, we will create a strong agenda on which sorts of tasks we will be doing. We will be ready to help in any situation, like in arts and crafts, reading literature, or recreational activities. We are so excited for this opportunity to acquire new skills and to help out!
