So far I have made some good progress, I have heard back from some people. I also reached out to some of my friends from elementary school who moved to Calgary. There are multiple people from different provinces that are looking forward to helping me with my project. I got about 5 photos from family members.
Everyone has been so helpful throughout the project so far! Specifically my cousin from Toronto, she is a kindergarten teacher. She emailed back and said that she would try to make it a class activity to go out and pick up litter around their city. I think this would be extremely helpful because it’s getting an extra 20+ people involved, helping to build connection, and teaching kids to look after their community.
One of the issues I had was people being confused about the whole situation. When i sent the email I accidentally sent the unedited email, it did not make any sense. I had to send another email apologizing and then sent the new email. I also haven’t heard back from as many people as I expected, but it is still early on into my project so I am not worried yet. I want to adapt to this, I realize that not everyone can pick up garbage in their community. I want to give other options on how people can save the planet. (1) “The Sustainable Development Goals spell out how we can protect our environment and slow climate change, from forests to oceans to everywhere in between.” This article recommends 12 ways to save the earth and slow climate change. I also wanted to wait until I had a few pictures to put into this post.
Down below is our cousins from Alberta at their camping trailer. In the picture they are separating leaves from garbage in order to put the trash into the correct bin.

Next I will have to be patient, and wait for more people to email me back. Also the may long weekend is coming up, and I do not currently have plans. So my plan is to pick up trash with my family all four days. This will significantly increases the amount of trash we have picked up.
Here was the email me and my mum sent our to all of our contacts.⬇️
Good afternoon,
Katelyn is doing a project for her social responsibility class and was hoping that you could assist her. She is trying to get as many people in as many cities, provinces, countries to assist her in trying to clean up the environment. Below is what she is asking you to help with if you can.
Hello everyone!! You can take as little or as much time as you can anytime between May 1 to May 15 to pick up any trash/garbage where you live. If you are willing to assist me all I ask is that you send me a photo by email of your successful clean up (ie. a photo of the bag of trash that you helped pick up). I am hopeful that there is no trash discarded carelessly however we know that litter is still an issue especially around schools, parks, etc and I would really like to bring awareness to the issue. Hopefully our collective efforts will show others that if we all just throw our trash into the garbage instead of littering we will all live in a cleaner environment and we can take pride in the cleanliness of our neighbourhoods and public spaces. If you can help I would need the photo of any litter collected by May 15th. If anything noteworthy happens during the time you are picking up litter I would appreciate if you could share the story. Feel free to ask others that you know to also participate. Please let me know if you and/or your friends will be able to assist me with my project.
You can email me katelynmantel5@gmail.com
Thank you for your consideration!!
Katelyn
