Welcome to blog post #4! This week my partner and I have made some more progress in our project with The Madison Care Centre. Recently we have visited the care center itself and we have been taken on a tour. For both myself and Vicky, it was our first time visiting a care center and it was really mind-opening and intriguing to see how centers like, The Madison, operate.
One of the biggest successes we’ve had thus far has been contacting The Madison. We were incredibly happy to get a response back and finally we got to take the next step further and visit the center. Moreover, at the care center, Vicky and I were introduced to a few residents as well as the building itself. The experience was certainly not like anything I’ve ever done before, and meeting a few new people had already began to shift my perspective. On the contrary, we did in fact struggle with a few things, one of which happened the day of our visit. Our schedule seemed to have been miscommunicated with the Volunteer Coordinator, and we had to wait a little while until anyone had arrived. But, in the mean time, we were able to take in the daily comings and goings of doctors, nurses, residents, and even watch a bingo game. Next time, we’ll make sure to communicate ahead of time and make sure that both parties are on the same page prior to arrival.
As we continue our project, we don’t plan to stop or do less work! Soon, we are planning to head back to The Madison for our first actual volunteering session. Though we have yet to organize and plan specific activities with the Volunteer Coordinator, we are hoping to come sometime on the weekend and help with things like, exercise, games, i.e.; bingo, or simply have some meaningful conversations! We hope to learn a lot from these visits, and hopefully create a positive impact for the short time that we are there, with the help of some research1, we can dedicate time to work on our communication, empathy, and patience with others.
