Blog Post #5

The main part of our action is now complete! My peers and I were finally able to settle on a date and go around, helping our local community. On Thursday, we spent a good chunk of our evening in Lafarge lake park picking up pieces of garbage from various areas of the park, including the grassy area, playground area, and the leisure areas. For example, an area we decided to focus on was around the Rocky Point ice cream area where there seemed to be a fair amount of litter like spoon wrappers and napkins.

Thankfully, we were able to put our project into action without any dangers or harm. At first, the majority of the park actually seemed pretty clean, but when we took a closer look, there was still a considerable amount of garbage throughout the park. We were able to gather on a really nice sunny day and find a good amount of garbage to clean up. Like I mentioned before, there weren’t any hazardous materials like needles around so that was definitely a good sign of great maintenance at our local parks. And obviously, it was a huge success that all 3 of us were able to make it to Lafarge on Thursday.

One big challenge was the weather, because the day we were originally supposed to meet up was earlier than Thursday, but it was rainy so we emailed Mrs. Martin and asked if we could reschedule our action project date which went great. Initially, a big challenge was also finding garbage generally, because although there was plenty of pieces here and there, it was definitely less than we anticipated; though that’s more a success since it just goes to show that other people take great care of our local community. There was however some concerning biohazard items like face masks and gloves lying around in different places and according to the guide to the exposure of these items, it would be best to avoid contact, but if accidentally contacted, seek first aid attention and sanitize exposed area thoroughly (1).

For next week, we’re going to focus on our presentation of learning, and also coming up with ways to expand our overall knowledge of this topic. There’s definitely still a long way to go!
