Blog Post #4 Trash Pick-Up Project

Hi everyone, welcome to my post #4!

Where is your initiative at? (For example, what level of participation have you had so far? Describe with examples.)

Right now, I have been busy preparing a map for the locations of garbage bins that can be used by members of the community to maintain cleanliness at the park (Blue Mountain Park). My intention is to prepare it digitally as it will be easy to make its copies. I am using the Canva application with the help of a map from the City of Coquitlam.

What achievements have you made? Provide specific examples.

I have had a few achievements so far. First, I have finished creating my poster digitally. Second, I have planned the date and time when my friends and I will do the activity. Third, I now have the tongs which I am using to pick up any dangerous garbage in the cleanup activity.

What are some of the challenges you have faced? Have you been able to overcome them? If so, how? Provide specific examples. If not, can you suggest some solutions that might work next time or if a similar situation arises? Again, provide specific examples.

Up to now, I have had a variety of difficulties when working on my project. First, I was not sure if I wanted to make my poster by hand or make it digitally. I wanted to make it by hand since I could be more creative using things like pens, stickers, and letter stencils. Eventually, I chose to do my poster digitally because it was easier and quicker to make multiple copies. This made the poster more practical from an efficiency point of view. Moreover, I had problems locating the trash containers in the park to put into my map because I didn’t know where they located. I overcame this challenge by investing my own time walking through the park and figuring out where they were ubicated. Third, several of the friends I am cleaning up with asked me what are the safety rules for picking up trash. At that moment, I didn’t know how to answer, so I did some research on my own and found two websites: one with a checklist of safety guidelines for before, during, and after the cleanup, and another that explains each step of conducting a community cleanup. (1, 2) Now I can assure my friends that we all can do a community cleanup effectively while enjoying spending time together.

What will you do next and why?

I am planning my community cleanup with friends! I have already purchased all the items needed for the cleanup such as trash bags, tongs and gloves, and I’ve explained safety rules to my friends ahead of time to help prevent any injury or accidents while cleaning. Also, I have finish making my poster for the cleanup. My hope is by creating this community cleanup and with the help of my poster it will inspire more people in the community to participate in these types of activities to help keep a desirable place for everyone and create a place where both humans and animals can live in harmony.
