BLOG POST #7 – Helping Hands

1.) What challenges did you overcome throughout this action project? How did you go about
overcoming these challenges?

Finally, the updates on this project must come to an end for this semester, though I will be continuing to volunteer at the Madison Care Center. Throughout this project my partner, Valeriya and I have overcome numerous challenges. They ranged from various aspects, like patience, communication, sympathy and so much more. Personally, I have had problems when talking with residents, such as residents understanding and hearing me. For instance, last week when conducting anonymous surveys on their opinions of the general satisfaction the Madison I had trouble with some seniors. I had to re-explain the same question multiple times, using different examples and synonyms in hoping they could comprehend. Also, I had some difficulty when they would ask me what I think and my opinion, and their frustration. To overcome these challenges I needed to use different communication skills in context, including speaking clearly, eye contact, summarization and much more.

How to Communicate Effectively with Older Adults

2.) How did this action change the way you think? How did this investigation/action impact your future decisions?

Furthermore, after completing this project it has drastically changed the manner I use communication skills with others. After spending a lot of time at the Madison my communication and critical thinking skills have been able to flourish and grow. For example, when I was unsure of where residents lived I found different staff members to direct me to their rooms. I learned how to divert conversation to positive topics, maintain a happy environment and cleanly finish chit-chats on a good note. In all, I believe that after this action project different skills such as my future communication, critical thinking skills and much more have became much stronger and better. I will continue to use these expertise in upcoming opportunities, like interviews, work and school.

3.)What impact will this investigation/action have on others locally and/or globally?

Finally, this action project has affected, and will have ongoing positive affects on numerous people. As mentioned, the opportunity to volunteer at the Madison has helped me develop many skills, that I can use continue to help others and myself. In addition, We have also had the chance to assist individuals in a more direct fashion. Notably, we have helped the residents in physical ways, by one on ones and deep conversations. Moreover, we have supported different activities, such as bingo and story time which in turn took some stress off of different recreational staff. In summary, this project has bloomed into a great successes because we have helped create multiple positive impacts for the present and future.
