Blog Post #2 – Project Plan

My question this semester is: “How much does a person’s past shape the life they have today?” I look forward to researching more about this question and the different factors that can influence a person’s life.

Research Round 1: Understanding how a person’s past can affect their future

I will start by researching how a person’s childhood, family, environment, and past experiences can influence their life as they grow older. I want to look at factors such as education, family relationships, financial circumstances, opportunities, difficult experiences, etc. I also want to understand whether experiences during childhood can affect the way people make decisions, build relationships, and respond to challenges later in life. This step is important because before I can answer my question, I need to understand how and why someone’s past can continue to affect their future. It will give me a solid foundation for the rest of my research instead of just assuming that everyone’s past affects them in the same way.

Research Round 2: Can people overcome difficult circumstances?

For my second round, I will research whether people can change the direction of their lives despite having difficult experiences in their past. I want to look at ideas such as resilience, personal choices, education, supportive relationships, and opportunities to make positive changes. I will also look at real examples of people who experienced difficult circumstances but were able to create different lives for themselves. At the same time, I want to consider situations where people’s circumstances make change more difficult. This will help me understand whether a person’s past determines their future, or whether people have the ability to overcome some of the circumstances they were given.

Research Round 3: How much does society influence a person’s opportunities?

For my final research round, I will look at the role that society and the community play in helping people change their circumstances. I will research things such as access to education, healthcare, housing, financial support, employment, and community programs. I want to understand whether having support and opportunities can make it easier for someone to overcome a difficult past. I will also compare the importance of personal choices with the influence of outside circumstances. Using what I learn from the first two research rounds, I will use this final round to help me form a balanced answer to my inquiry question. I want to determine whether a person’s future is mainly shaped by their past, their own choices, the opportunities available to them, or some combination of all three.

Here are my five sources that I think would be useful for this question:

–About Adverse Childhood Experiences | Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) | CDC (difficult experiences during childhood can(?) affect a person’s health, well-being, education, and opportunities later in life)

–Resilience (how people respond to difficult experiences and what can help them adapt and recover from challenges)

–Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University (how childhood experiences, relationships, and a person’s environment may influence their development)

–UNICEF, for every child (information about childhood, poverty, education, inequality, and how a person’s circumstances can affect their opportunities and future)

–PubMed – this is actually a database (find research studies about childhood experiences, resilience, development, and long-term outcomes)

Now why does this question matter to me?

This question matters to me because it started from something I personally experienced while I was in Hong Kong. I met a group of people who had difficult backgrounds and experiences that were very different from my own. Hearing some of their stories made me realize that I do not always know what someone has gone through before judging their situation or the choices they make. It made me think about how much of a person’s life is influenced by circumstances they had no control over, and how much they can change through their own decisions. Everyone comes from a different background. Some people may grow up with strong family support, financial stability, good educational opportunities, or a safe environment, while others may have to overcome much more difficult circumstances. Understanding these differences could help people become more open-minded and less likely to judge others without knowing their story. By studying this question, I hope to better understand the balance between the circumstances that people are given and the choices they make for themselves in the end.
