BLOG POST #3: Why Are Developing Countries Affected More by Climate Change?

Hi everyone! In this blog, I want to talk about a serious issue: why developing countries, like Kenya and many others in Africa, are affected more by climate change. From floods and droughts to health problems and poor infrastructure, the impact is huge. Let’s look at some reasons why this happens.

1. Health Problems and Weak Healthcare Systems

Climate change brings more diseases like malaria and dengue fever, especially in hot and wet places like tropical regions. Sadly, most developing countries don’t have strong healthcare systems, so it’s harder to treat people and stop the spread of diseases (Ebi & Semenza, 2008).

2. Poor Infrastructure

Infrastructure means things like roads, water supply, buildings, and power lines. In many developing countries, these systems are weak or poorly built. So, when floods or storms come, buildings get damaged easily, and people are left without power, clean water, or transportation . Coastal areas suffer more when there are no strong flood defenses.

3. Location and Geography

Many developing countries are located in areas that are more likely to experience the effects of climate change. Some cities are built near oceans, rivers, or wetlands, making them more likely to face floods, heat waves, and even air pollution.

4. More Climate Hazards

Most developing countries are in tropical and subtropical zones, where there are more extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and storms. For example, island countries are in danger of rising sea levels, which can destroy homes and farmland .

5. Lack of Money and Technology to Adapt

Adapting to climate change needs money and good technology. This includes building stronger buildings, growing drought-resistant crops, and using renewable energy. But many developing countries don’t have enough funds or equipment to do this, which leaves them more exposed to damage

6. People Living in Risky Places

Many people in developing countries live in flood-prone areas or in informal settlements (slums) where there are no proper roads, hospitals, or drainage systems. When disasters strike, these people are affected the most and have very few ways to recover quickly (Ebi & Semenza, 2008).

7. Weak Government Systems

Good leadership is needed to deal with climate change. But in some developing countries, corruption, poor planning, and weak laws make it hard to take action. Sometimes leaders focus more on politics than on long-term climate plans, which delays progress .
