Coaching can have a bigger impact on athletes than people might realize. It is not just about teaching skills, planning practices, or winning games. Coaches can influence how athletes feel about themselves, how motivated they are, and whether they want to continue playing the sport. For my research plan, I want to focus on three main topics that will help me understand how coaching affects an athlete’s passion for their sport and what makes a coach have a positive or negative impact.

The first topic I want to research is how different coaching styles affect athletes. I chose this because not every coach teaches or communicates in the same way. Some coaches are more supportive and encouraging, while others are stricter and put more pressure on the athlete. I want to learn how these different approaches can affect an athlete’s confidence, motivation, and enjoyment of their sport. For example, a coach who encourages athletes to learn from their mistakes might help them feel more comfortable trying new things. On the other hand, a coach who focuses too much on mistakes might make athletes feel nervous about playing. Researching this topic will help me understand which coaching styles are more likely to help athletes develop a lasting passion for their sport.

The second topic I want to research is how a coach can influence an athlete’s motivation and confidence. I think this is important because athletes do not always perform their best, and they can experience setbacks, lose games, or struggle to improve. During these times, a coach’s support and communication can make a difference in how an athlete responds to challenges. I want to learn whether things like positive feedback, setting realistic goals, and building trust can help athletes stay motivated. I also want to understand how criticism and pressure can affect an athlete’s confidence. This research will help me understand how a coach can encourage athletes to keep working toward their goals and continue enjoying their sport, even when things get difficult.

The third topic I want to research is how coaching can contribute to athletes losing interest in their sport, and what coaches can do to prevent this. I chose this topic because some athletes eventually quit sports even if they used to love playing them. There can be many reasons for this, including stress, pressure to win, exhaustion, and feeling like sports are no longer fun. I want to learn how a coach’s expectations and behaviour might contribute to these feelings, as well as how coaches can create a more positive team environment. For example, balancing competition with enjoyment and making athletes feel valued could help them stay involved.

I chose this topic because sports have been a big part of my life. I have played basketball since I was little and field hockey for five years, so I understand how much time, effort, and commitment athletes put into their sports. Throughout my experience, I have seen how important coaches can be in helping athletes improve and enjoy playing. I want to learn more about what makes a coach effective, not just at teaching the game, but also at supporting the people on their team. This research could help me reflect on my own experiences as an athlete.

This question also has implications for my community because sports are a big part of many schools and local communities. Coaches influence young athletes and can help them develop skills that go beyond sports, such as teamwork, communication, confidence, and determination. By learning more about the impact of coaching, I hope to better understand how coaches can create environments where athletes feel supported and want to keep participating.
