Blog Post #1 – How does sleep really affect students’ behaviour in their daily lives?

For my semester 1 project, I have decided to dive into the inquiry question “How does sleep really affect students’ behaviour in their daily lives?”

I have decided to explore this inquiry question because sleep is something that is essential, especially for students who have to balance school, extracurricular activities, and their personal lives. Sleep is an important part of our daily routine, yet many students do not get enough of it. Although most people understand that sleep helps us feel less tired, it can affect much more than just our energy levels. In general, it can influence our mood, attitude, focus, and the way we interact with others throughout the day.

I chose this research question because I want to gain a deeper understanding of how sleep affects students and their behaviour. This can include how much sleep a student gets, how they respond to stressful situations, or how they treat the people around them. I am especially interested in how a lack of sleep can influence someone’s emotions and decision-making. Students often have busy schedules and may sacrifice sleep to finish assignments, study for tests, or participate in extracurricular activities. However, I wonder whether these choices affect their behaviour more than they realize.

Sleep is a very important part of my life, yet so many people overlook it as a simple sacrifice. When a student stays up late, they may get better school results, but their mood and behaviour affects themselves, as well as their social lives. This can lead to long term mental health issues, as students may become more irritable, less motivated, or more easily distracted without realizing that their sleep habits could be contributing to these changes. Through this inquiry project, I want to understand the connection between sleep and behaviour, and how getting enough sleep can influence the way students think, feel, and interact with others. By researching this topic, I hope to better understand why sleep matters beyond simply feeling rested and how it can affect students’ daily lives.

Thank you for reading my first post, I look forward to sharing what I learn as I continue to explore this topic!
